(Furthest/Farthest Distance in the World)
F6 U# O. W. q) X( p) w! G

Farther, further, longest, or widest?
3 @+ k! s7 Y4 ?3 i, `7 S& nSome people raised the question of whether "farther" or "further" should be used in the translation for "最遥远的距离". People who are for "further" pointed out that some dictionaries claim that both further and farther can be used for distances. Supporters for the use of "farther" pointed to writing style guides, such as, X8 t, l: ~' y6 u0 p6 g) t
"The Little Brown Book"
& H6 G C! W! T1 [ c+ C2 Sthat stipulates "farther" is for distance, and "further" is for degree.
: V6 f( H: r6 M6 R) b2 ^, C8 e- BSome pointed out that neither further nor farther is the right choice. There is no such thing as a far or near distance, but a "long" or "short" distance. Besides, what is meant here is a gap between two objects. "最遥远的距离"should. therefore, be translated either as "the longest distance" or the "widest divide.", K: r" ~% N P( g, I1 v3 G
