网上流传极广的 世界上最遥远的距离"(Furthest/Farthest Distance in the World) 原是中文, 背后有一个有趣的典故。2 V# P# h4 r$ [9 p, _: ^5 H
张小娴在《荷包里的单人床》的一句：“世上最遥远的距离，不是生与死的距离，不是天各一方，而是我就站在你面前，你却不知道我爱你。后来被一群台湾学生改编了(集體創作接龍 ).2003年 《读者》杂志第14期上引诗，署名是泰戈尔.后以讹传讹 传千千万万.% ]% U+ w# I6 @ `, g$ u5 X
网上乱说这是泰戈尔的作品的人很多。 用百度或Google搜一下。你可见千千万万个。 这些人都是以讹传讹，自己没有审核过，在别处看到有人说是泰戈尔，便自己也说是“老泰”的作品。 更有些说是“飞鸟与鱼”。其实只要在网上搜一搜泰戈尔诗的英译本看一看，便立即看出泰戈尔的诗根本不是这样的风格。/ F6 U# O. W. q) X( p) w! G

Farther, further, longest, or widest?

People who are for "further" pointed out that some dictionaries claim that both further and farther can be used for distances. Supporters for the use of "farther" pointed to writing style guides, such as, X8 t, l: ~' y6 u0 p6 g) t

& H6 G C! W! T1 [ c+ C2 Sthat stipulates "farther" is for distance, and "further" is for degree.
: V6 f( H: r6 M6 R) b2 ^, C8 e- BSome pointed out that neither further nor farther is the right choice. There is no such thing as a far or near distance, but a "long" or "short" distance. Besides, what is meant here is a gap between two objects. "最遥远的距离"should. therefore, be translated either as "the longest distance" or the "widest divide.", K: r" ~% N P( g, I1 v3 G
