It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious 6 d9 [9 p _( L- p
call from Sen. McCain.

Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even

for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for

of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their

& }' Y* m) Z5 C* I: M* `9 GIt drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold + e% g, k$ f; h' x, {
and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the

There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall , P4 I1 S+ g) p3 K

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us

% n# D/ R& D0 VIt can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit

that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist 2 b0 |% A5 N6 W% k$ I Y
the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and 3 q& i8 \# B$ U" I7 q& J' Z- V
immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long./ c) y3 Q) T2 q# l' f

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
& }" s( v7 n3 a7 Mbanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
& [. \8 z, t- B2 G" ~7 ]values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.# V+ H" Z; V" J
# _6 s+ x# X7 a5 E2 ^Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won + s1 k4 ]; {5 e$ g7 w2 r
a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and " k. h4 ], \6 I! `
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.

line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann 2 l& A' G' D* C3 y/ t7 w8 |; {" Z
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she ' U- N; R4 j; x" x( f' q" f8 p' ]
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of
+ N: j- b; d) \6 Dcommon purpose. Yes we can.
- C" L8 r1 G, t- `6 c9 X5 O+ P
2 d; p8 c$ A: ]! PWhen the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was , N6 P, i$ j) k
there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. 8 l6 e2 h4 |3 X, S6 H+ b% P$ ~
Yes we can.
8 u0 i2 y' o* q( Q* O$ l8 M% J' i# U0 P/ w( Q
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a + |7 Q7 w1 y# G
bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We
: i4 \7 N9 k" ZShall Overcome." Yes we can.

+ P8 i& V# `& n J9 MA man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was $ R; ?: D% ^1 H6 h* z
connected by our own science and imagination.

: u( }7 G* i, y3 y1 S) uAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and
, C6 x5 L M+ e4 t& K& u# N! ocast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of
